More than 15.5 percent of American households pay $250 or more for their monthly electricity bill, according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2017-21 American Community Survey data. High electricity prices have enormous ramifications for the future of the U.S. economy, given the need to slow climate change by using renewable sources of energy.

The Social Explorer analysis finds some of the counties with more than 10,000 households and the highest costs of electricity are located in areas that haven’t invested heavily in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. They include Thomas County, Ga., where 46.9 percent of households pay $250 or more for power. It’s followed by Rockland County, N.Y. (43.9 percent); Danville City, Va. (43.4 percent); Harris County, Ga. (41.1 percent); and Dougherty County, Ga. (40 percent).
